What can I expect from physical therapy?
Your first visit with your physical therapist will incude
an initial evaluation where the therapist will ask you questions, take range of motion measurements, test your strength, and perform special tests as it relates to your primary diagnosis. The therapist gathers as much information from you through the evaluation process to formulate an individualized therapy plan. Your point of view and goals for recovery are important. During your following appointments, your therapist may incorporate a variety of techniques to help address your weaknesses including exercise, manual therapy, gait training, and various modalities to help control pain. You will also be given exercises to work on at home which are imperative to your recovery. In addition to a home exercise program, your therapist will educate you how the skills you developed in your treatment sessions are able to transfer to your daily life. Upon starting an exercise program, you may experience some soreness, increased pain, or a change in your pain location. This is normal, but be sure to tell your therapist about any change in symptoms. As you get stronger this will diminish, and you will be able to tolerate more advanced exercises. You will also notice that life tasks will be less painful and easier for you. Your physical therapist will continually reassess your progress toward your treatment goals and will work with you and other health professionals to plan for your discharge from physical therapy.
